Internal prestressing of ultra‐high performance concrete using shape memory fibers

Using shape memory fibers to reinforce concrete is a novel concept in civil engineering. Pre-stretched are brought into and after activating the effect, compressive prestress state introduced. The present work investigates this method numerically. A brief introduction relevant behavior of alloys given. Fiber activation modeled by an empirical phase transition model. Simulations carried out applying Finite Element Method solve CAUCHY-FOURIER equations. Results studies presented for single-fiber, improved single-fiber multi-fiber configurations. Special focus put on geometric type strain release. Key findings that stresses can be introduced concrete, however, local tension will occur. By altering fiber geometry elastomeric coating, these regions eliminated. Furthermore, when using multiple fibers, there synergies between compression.
